Orlistat is a medicine that can aid in weight loss if you are overweight or obese. Orlistat works by blocking chemicals (enzymes) in your gut that digest fat. Almost a third of the fat that you eat is blocked by orlistat. The undigested fat is not absorbed into the body and is passed out with your faeces. This will stop the body from gaining weight, however, it will not necessarily cause you to lose weight. You'll require to start a balanced diet and exercise programme before beginning treatment with orlistat, and continue this programme in the course of the treatment and after you stop taking orlistat.
Warnings
The following individuals should not take orlistat:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- People under the age of 18 years.Anyone with a condition where food is not absorbed properly (a malabsorption syndrome).
- Individuals with cholestasis. This is a condition where bile does not flow properly from the liver to the duodenum.
- Orlistat can also interfere with the absorption of certain medicines and vitamins and affect the way that they function.
- Certain treatments for HIV and AIDS.
- Ciclosporin.
- Acarbose.
- Levothyroxine.
- Amiodarone.
- Warfarin.
- Some epilepsy treatments.
Directions
The normal dose is one capsule - 120 mg, three times a day with each meal. If you forget to take your medicine at any time, take it as soon as you remember provided this is within one hour of your last meal, then continue to take it at the usual times.

Side Effects
You may have fatty smelly stools, an urgency to get to the toilet, oily spotting on your underclothes, and excess wind.
